Also known as a flat finish, this type of paint is commonly used on interior walls, especially if small bumps, cracks, or other imperfections need to be camouflaged.
As the name suggests, an eggshell paint finish has just a hint of shine or gloss, much like the slight sheen of an eggshell. It stands up better to cleaning than a matte finish.
Satin finish paint has just a little more gloss than eggshell. It can be used on walls, but it’s more commonly used to paint windows, doors, trim, and ceilings because of its smooth, velvety look. Because it holds up well to cleaning and light scrubbing, it’s often the finish of choice for the walls of children’s room, kitchens, bathrooms, and other high-traffic areas.
Because semi-gloss paint is easily cleaned and has a subtle shine, it is commonly used on doors, trim, and kitchen or bathroom cabinets. The surface has to be very carefully prepared, because any imperfections are highlighted by a semi-gloss finish.
The very shiny finish of high-gloss paint look similar to enamel or plastic. It is sometimes used on cabinets, trim, and furniture. Careful surface preparation is highly important where glossy paint is to be used, because any surface imperfections will be magnified.
